Dental implants

An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a titanium post set into the jawbone. Once the bone has grown around it, a crown is fitted on top. It stands on its own, so the healthy teeth either side are left untouched.

Who it suits

An implant is usually considered when a tooth has been lost or has to be removed, and you'd rather not file down the healthy teeth on either side to carry a bridge.

It needs enough bone to hold the post and gums in good condition — both checked at the first visit. If there isn't enough bone, we'll say so and go through the alternatives.

What the visits involve

Visit 1 · 40 min
Examination, X-ray, 3D scan
Bone height and gum health assessed, images taken, options explained. Nothing is done to the tooth on this visit.
Visit 2 · 60–90 min
Placing the implant
Under local anaesthetic. The area is numb throughout; most people describe pressure rather than pain. Home the same day.
Then · 3–6 months
Healing
The bone grows around the post and locks it in place. A temporary tooth can be fitted if the gap shows when you smile.
Visits 3–4
Fitting the crown
Impression taken, crown made to match the neighbouring shade, then fitted and adjusted until the bite feels right.

Recovery, honestly

DAY 0Numbness wears off over two or three hours. Soft food, nothing hot. Painkillers as prescribed.
DAYS 1–3Some swelling, usually peaking on day two. Most people go to work the next day.
DAY 7–10Review appointment. Stitches removed if any were placed.
ONWARDSBrushing and flossing as normal, plus a check-up every six months.

Call the clinic if pain increases after day three rather than settling — that's worth looking at.

Cost — not published yet
Reserved for how fees are quoted: what the consultation covers, whether the crown is included, and whether payment can be staged. Decide with the client whether a figure or a range goes here.
